(CNN) -- Egypt on Tuesday lifted a three-month state of emergency that was put in place after hundreds were killed in clashes involving security personnel and protesters in Cairo, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported..

The country's administrative court ordered that the emergency -- which was intended to limit public gatherings -- be lifted Tuesday afternoon, two days earlier than expected, MENA reported.

Egypt's Cabinet had said previously that the emergency would be lifted on Thursday.

Egypt has seen periods of unrest since a coup ousted former President Mohamed Morsy in July and the military installed an interim administration.

The emergency was ordered in August after clashes flared when security forces broke up huge Cairo sit-ins led by Morsy supporters. Hundreds died and thousands were injured.
